Patriots Game Plan vs. the New York Jets

The Jets present some unique challenges on offense and defense. Here are some ways the Patriots could attack them in all three phases.

This week’s game plan against the Jets.

Offense

1.Run outside: The Patriots need to run the ball outside. They will a tough time against Quinnen Williams and Javon Kinlaw. Run at their edge guys. They are soft against the run and it will slow them down as pass rushers.

2. Attack the corner opposite Sauce Gardner: Gardner is one of the best in the game so don’t go to his side too much. With the Jets injuries in the secondary, the Patriots need to attack the other corner and the middle of the field. Hunter Henry could have a big game today.

3. Three man routes and delay releases: The Jets defensive line will present a major challenge today. The Patriots have to use more three man concepts and check release their wing tight ends and running backs. The offensive line was destroyed the last time these two teams met. Alex Van Pelt must help this unit today with his play calling.

4. Heavy perimeter screen and draw plan: The Patriots need to find ways to slow down the Jets pass rush. One of the ways to do it is perimeter screens that get the ball out quick and draw running plays. If the Patriots can establish the ground game today, I like play-action perimeter screens that mirror the run game.

Defense

1.Bring edge pressure: The Patriots need to blitz Aaron Rodgers more and the best way to do it is bring edge pressure. That not only pressures him but it keeps him in the pocket. The Patriots need to be more exotic. Bring two from one side. Sugar rushing is key today for the edge guys.

2. Eight and nine man fronts: The Patriots will have to play more eight and nine man fronts today. With the struggles of the defense against the run being on full display, it is up to the coaching staff to help these guys schematically. Look for more man free and 3 deep in the secondary and more safety movement as the Patriots try to add another body to the box.

3. Move the inside linebackers: The Patriots need to do more with their inside linebackers. They are too stagnant. Move them around, mug them at the line, bring them, drop them. Simulate more pressure. It is not about confusing Rodgers. You do it to confuse the blocking schemes affect line calls.

4. T-E’s and E-T’s: The Patriots need to continue to do more with their ends and tackles when it comes to stunting up front. This has been a very inconsistent part of their game planning defensively. They need to find ways to free guys up more. I would also do more delayed pressure this week and have my inside backers read and blitz open gaps late.

Special Teams

1. Kick away from Xavier Gipson: The Patriots have to be careful with the speedy Gipson. Try to kick away from him in all situations. Especially when he returns punts.
