Patriots Free Agent Preview: EDGE/Defensive End

The Patriots need to improve their pass rush. Expect them to spend to upgrade the edge and defensive end spots. Josh Sweat and Harold Landry top the wish list but there several other players who could fit the Patriots system well.

Here are ten targets for the Patriots to focus on in free agency.

Top 10 EDGE, Defensive End targets

Josh Sweat

Harold Landry

Dayo Odeyingbo

Azeez Ojulari

Charles Omenihu

Chase Young

Joe Tryon

Kyzir White

Clelin Ferrell

Deatrich Wise

Breakdown: Sweat will be a primary target as the Patriots look to add some juice to the pass rush. He had 11 sacks in 2022 and 8 sacks this past season. Sweat would be a great fit as a five technique in the Patriots 4-3 defense.

Landry to the Patriots makes a lot of sense. The former BC standout played for Mike Vrabel in Tennessee and he knows the scheme. At 6-2 250, Landry can play on and off the ball. He has 50.5 career sacks and when healthy, is explosive off the edge.

Odeyingbo has a lot of upside because of his versatility and size. He can play defensive end on early downs and kick inside to tackle in sub packages. At 6’6 285, Odeyingbo’s best football is ahead of him.

Ojulari and Omenihu offer situational pass rush upside and could be more of a value, especially on short term deals. Both have the potential to hit double digits in sacks.

Young and Tyron are defensive ends who could potentially start if signed. Both have pass rush upside but they are not as explosive as Sweat and Landry. Both players are strong against the run and can set an edge.

White can rush the passer on and off the ball but he is more of an off the ball linebacker who can be a three down player. The former Arizona Cardinal could stay in the desert. If he does not, the Patriots could be a good scheme fit.

Ferrell has not lived up to being a top five pick but he has managed to carve out a nice career for himself as a pass rusher. Bringing back Wise would make sense from leadership and on field perspective. Wise can still play and he is versatile.
