With the trade of Mac Jones yesterday, the Patriots currently only have two quarterbacks on the roster, Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke. The Patriots will add at least another one but more than likely two more quarterbacks in the coming days and weeks.
One of those quarterbacks will be a veteran free agent. That will be the focus of this piece. We will talk about about what they will do at a late time.
With Baker Mayfield and Kirk Cousins off the board, the Patriots will shift their focus to a mentor type quarterback who will help develop the quarterback they draft next month.
Former 2016 draft pick Jacoby Brissett appears to be the favorite. He is familiar with the organization having played here before and is familiar with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
Other options include Gardner Minshew who could be a good stop gap quarterback for one to two years, Joe Flacco who played in Cleveland last year and is also familiar with Van Pelt’s scheme and Jameis Winston who has been linked to the Patriots in the past.
Drew Lock, Carson Wentz, Tyrod Taylor, Mason Rudolph, Tyler Huntley and Marcus Mariota are also possibilities.
It is a deep free agent group with a lot of experience but it is hard not seeing the Patriots settling on Brissett given the connections between him and the Patriots.
He would be the perfect mentor given his experience in multiple scheme, playing for multiple coaches. He is exactly what the Patriots need to bring along a potential franchise quarterback.
