Patriots: Day one and two training camp thoughts

Day three of training camp kicks off this morning. Here are some thoughts on camp thus far.

1. Julien Edelman’s broken thumb hurts because the Patriots have a lot of new faces to break in at receiver and tight end. They could use Edelman’s experience at the position.

2. Danny Etling moving from quarterback to wide receiver was the story of day one. Etling looked like he belonged but he only runs a 4.7. He would have to play fast in games and contribute on special teams in order to make this team.

3. Don’t read too much into Tom Brady not practicing yesterday. It was a maintenance day not contractual as some have tried to speculate.

4. Back up quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham didn’t exactly WOW the crowds yesterday. That is life in the NFL. There are not enough good quarterbacks to go around.

5. David Andrews and Michael Bennett were nowhere to be found day one. As far as we know, Bennett did report on Wednesday. Stay tuned.

6. Deatrich Wise was activated yesterday from the PUP list and is ready to go. This is a big year for Wise. He needs to step up and contribute, especially as a pass rusher.

7. The new receivers have not looked sharp so far. In fact, a false start by rookie wideout N’Keal Harry led to the team running at the end of practice yesterday.

8. The tight ends have impressed thus far particularly Matt LaCosse and Stephen Anderson. The Patriots beefed up at the position after the retirement of Rob Gronkowski. There will be plenty of competition there.
