Patriots could retain Brown, add Embree and McCarthy as position coaches

Jerod Mayo continues to fill out his coaching staff. On Tuesday he hired Taylor Embree as running backs coach. Wednesday, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that Troy Brown could remain with the organization if he chooses to. In what capacity is undetermined but the Patriots have yet to hire a wide receivers coach. The Patriots also hired former Brown University offensive line coach Mike McCarthy as an offensive assistant as well.

Embree replaces Vinnie Sunseri who left to become the defensive backs coach with the Washington Huskies.

The 35 year old played wide receiver at UCLA and after being cut by the San Diego Chargers in 2012, he began his coaching career.

Embree accepted a graduate assistant position at UNLV in 2012. After one season with the Rebels, he returned to UCLA where he served as a graduate assistant for the Bruins through the 2015 season.

His professional coaching career began in 2016 as a defensive assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs, Embree joined the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive quality control coach in 2017. There, he worked alongside his father, Jon, — who is a long time NFL assistant and is currently the tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins. The younger Embree coached in San Francisco for two seasons before returning to the college game in 2020 at Colorado.

A year later, he was hired by the Jets as running backs coach when Robert Saleh took took the head job. Now he comes to New England where he will be tasked with turning around Rhamondre Stevenson after a disappointing 2023 season.

McCarthy has lengthy experience both in the NFL and college. He has coached with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, McCarthy also has FBS collegiate coaching experience having served as an assistant at Rutgers, Tulane and Western Michigan. At the FCS level, he has coached at North Carolina Central and for the past four seasons, he has been the offensive line coach at Brown.

Mayo still has a couple of spots that he need to fill but the staff is nearly filled out.
