Patriots: Bill Belichick needs to get the memo. The Cam Newton era is over

Bill Belichick is a proud but stubborn man. It was never more evident than after last night when he responded to a question regarding Cam Newton’s status as the starting quarterback by saying “I am glad you asked that. Cam is our quarterback.”

Cam is our quarterback? Really? After another abysmal performance and arguably the worse of his short Patriots career, Newton is still the starter? How? He completed 9 of 16 passes for 119 yards and an interception.

In Newton’s defense, the offensive line played their worst game of the season, yielding four sacks while Newton was in the game (six total). Despite that, it doesn’t change the fact that this team cannot throw the football and it is because Newton is wildly inconsistent as a passer.

We have debated and discussed what could possibly be wrong with Newton for weeks now. Is he hurt? Is it his mechanics? It doesn’t matter anymore! He is no longer the player he once was. It is time for Belichick to accept this fact and bench Newton for Jarrett Stidham.

At 6-7, the Patriots chances of making the playoffs stand at 6% or no chance. It is time to make the switch to Stidham so you could see what you have in him moving forward.

Playing Stidham in garbage time is not an accurate assessment of what he can do! Start him! Give him 90% of the reps at practice. See what he can do playing the entire game, not mopping up.

Belichick has always talked about doing what is best for the team. Starting Newton is not what is best for the team anymore. I know Newton has been a model citizen and a good teammate but that doesn’t mean he should be the team’s starting quarterback moving forward.

If Belichick truly cares about doing what’s right for the team, he will bench Newton. Unfortunately, I do not see it happening. Belichick is still hoping that the team can finish with a winning record and he thinks Newton gives him the best chance to accomplish this.

Belichick might be right. However it is not about wins and losses anymore. It is about about the future. Bill needs to get the memo. Newton is not a part of the team’s future plans.

Unfortunately, this time Bill the coach is screwing Bill the GM and it is because of stubbornness and short sightedness.
