Patriots begin first off-season program under Mike Vrabel

The Patriots kicked off the first voluntary workouts of the Mike Vrabel era on Monday. Several high profile players were in town to begin the off-season program. 

The first phase of the off-season program is voluntary for the players but the expectation is that the majority of the team will participate. Among the players set to arrive at the Patriots’ facility on Monday are starting quarterback Drake Maye, free agent acquisitions Milton Williams, Harold Landry, Stefon Diggs, Robert Spillane, Carlton Davis and Morgan Moses among others.

Per the NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement, the offseason workout program consists of three phases.

The first will focuses on strength and conditioning. Players are allowed to spend up to 90 minutes on the field each day and two hours total at the team’s facility under team supervision. Patriots director of sports performance Frank Piraino will lead the team in workouts. 

The Patriots also will hold a voluntary minicamp April 22-24.

Phase 2 starts in mid May. The Patriots will be allowed to hold individual and group drills over a three-week period. Offensive  players will be allowed to line up across from other offensive players, and defensive players will be allowed to do the same on defense. 

The third phase takes place during the final four weeks of offseason workouts. The team can run group periods consisting of 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. Teams cannot go full pads nor have any live contact will be allowed until the start of training camp in late July. 

Phase 3 begins in late May and also features 10 days of organized team activities as well as mandatory minicamp on June 9-11th. 

The full off-season schedule was announced last week and is listed below.

Voluntary workouts begin: April 7th

Voluntary minicamp: April 22-24

Organized team activities: May 19-20, May 22, May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3, June 5

Mandatory minicamp: June 9-11th
