Patricia to the Broncos? Sounds like it is going to happen

Former Patriots offensive and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia could soon have a new home.

Patricia recently interviewed with Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos for their vacant defensive coordinator opening. The Broncos ultimately hired former head coach Vance Joseph but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport intimated this morning that Patricia could still be in play in Denver as a senior defensive assistant.

Payton was asked about the possibility of Patricia joining the Broncos. He did not rule it out.

“I would say it’s a little early to answer that,” Payton told reporters. “The question was: Do I still possibly envision a role for Matt? And we just got here. He and I are gonna talk this week, and I wouldn’t rule that out, though. If that possibly came to fruition, it would be for a few things. I’d certainly want to talk to Vance and our defensive coaches. But I know Matt well enough to know how smart he is and what he can contribute. So, we’ll see.”

The possible love to Denver would make a lot of sense for Patricia as he looks for a fresh start after a tumultuous tenure as the Patriots play caller last season. Patricia drew the ire of Patriots fans who were frustrated with the inconsistent performance of the offense all season long.

When Bill Belichick was asked by the Boston Globe his thoughts on the possibility of Patricia joining the Broncos, he praised his former assistant.

“Matt’s a really good football coach who I have a ton of respect for.”

Belichick added: “He’s helped us win a lot of games and championships with the Patriots.”

Despite the Patriots struggles offensively, Patricia is well respected around the league for his intelligence and work ethic. It is not a surprise that he would get another shot elsewhere.

For now it is a waiting game for Patricia but do not be surprised if the Broncos announced they have hired him by week’s end. It makes too much sense for both parties not to happen.
