Pat McAfee talks Vrabel, Patriots with NEFJ at Radio Row

Just steps from the Pat McAfee Show set on Radio Row, dozens of content creators, journalists and fans lined up to shake hands, ask questions or just shoot the shit with Pat McAfee.

If you know me, you know I’m 5’1″ on a good day, so standing in what amounted to a mosh pit for about 45 minutes to get a few questions in wasn’t easy, but it certainly was worth it.

I asked McAfee about Mike Vrabel’s recent doubling down on saying he would cut off his most prized body part for a chance at a ring as a head coach, and if he’d be willing to do something that dramatic for anything in life.

“So, I think he said that a few years ago. If you watch the video, he looks a little bit younger…”

I quickly had to interrupt, letting him know that the HC of the NEP had stated it yet again.

“Ok, so if he did double down on it, I think I heard him say he’d cut off half of it as well…I think that type of commitment to sport is the reason why we all love Vrabel,” he said. “When push comes to shove, when the scissors come out, do we think he’d actually do it? Yes. I do think he would do it, especially for this New England Patriots team, which obviously, he loves.

“I don’t know if I’m necessarily willing to do that, but yeah, I’d go pretty far for the boys and for the good of the program. But, I think I’m going to keep my penis.”

I also asked McAfee why he thinks guys are willing to do anything for Vrabel too.

“I think the way he coaches, he is a part of the locker room, but obviously the alpha of the locker room,” said McAfee. “I think there as a clip where Stefon Diggs came over to the sideline and talked about blocking, and Vrabel looked at him and told him to shut the f**k up. It’s like, that’s Stefon Diggs, who’s already a made man, obviously a wide receiver.

“Vrabel was comfortable enough to talk shit to him and talk shit to everybody else. I think that’s a display of all the relationships he’s built, the amount of hours he’s been around everybody. I think that’s why he’s been able to kind of turn it around so quickly, because the boys love him and obviously, he’s certified. That’s a special quality.”

Lastly, I asked McAfee if he had played for any coaches that remind him of Vrabel.

“I never got to play for a head coach that was a former player,” he added. “Obviously, (Indy) hired Jeff Saturday off the couch. I was not on the team then. I wish I could have experienced that. I don’t know if there’s anybody like him. Obviously, you see like, MCDC up there in Detroit and you see the way Ben Johnson’s operating.

“But, Vrabel’s special man, congrats to you guys.”
