The Massachusetts Pirates are one win away from being IFL champions in their inaugural season after beating the Frisco Fighters 43-22 last night. The Pirates will face the top seeded Arizona Rattlers for the United Bowl which will be played on Sunday in Arizona. The Pirates advanced thanks in large part to their running game and defense. Pirates running back Justin Stockton rushed for 109 yards and scored two touchdowns…

UConn: Randy Edsall announces he is retiring at the end of the season

Photo courtesy of (AP/Phelan M. Ebenhack) In a stunning announcement, UConn Head Coach Randy Edsall has announced he is retiring at the end of the season. Edsall made the announcement this afternoon. The news is surprising given how early in the season it is but in reality, it is not all that surprising. Edsall has had a hard time turning the program around since returning to Storrs in 2017. In…

Holy Cross: Crusaders upset UConn to pick up their first FBS win in 19 years

Three years ago, Holy Cross hired Bob Chesney to return the football program to prominence. The administration did not place a timetable on when the program needed to be contending by but if they did, I am not sure they thought the program would reach that level so soon. The Crusaders have won back to back Patriot League titles but the program lacked that signature regular season win. Holy Cross…

UMass: Minutemen struggle in 51-7 rout at Pitt

Image courtesy of Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports The hope heading into this season was that UMass was ready to take a step forward, if not in wins and losses, then in competitiveness and intangibles. But after watching the Minutemen get blown out, 51-7, by Pittsburgh in Saturday’s season opener, it was hard to find many silver linings. There were times when the defense played well, but it was only in…

Boston College: Hafley thrilled with his first real Alumni Stadium experience

Let’s be honest, when you’ve coached in the NFL and places like the Big House and the Horseshoe at Ohio State like Jeff Hafley has, not many atmospheres are going to impress you. Still, Saturday afternoon was a special day for Hafley, his family and the rest of the Boston College football community. For many of the coaches and players it was the first time they got to experience a…

Boston College: Eagles roll 51-0 in home opener

CHESTNUT HILL – As students ran through the same tunnel of cheerleaders that the football team would soon run out of Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium, college football was finally back. A large group of lucky fans sprinted towards the student section in the end zone – nearly bumping into Colgate players coming out of their tunnel – before the Eagles soon broke through the giant gold “BC” banner and…

Both teams are in their inaugural season and both organizations have made quite an impression this season. The two teams split the two regular season meetings with each team winning at home. The Fighters beat the Pirates 40-33 and the Pirates beat the Fighters 38-37 a couple of weeks later. One game separated…

Boston College preview: Colgate Raiders (0-0) vs. Boston College Eagles (0-0)

Line: BC -44.5 (O/U 56.5) Three offensive keys: 1. Let it fly: All summer long we’ve talked about the weapons on offense, well, let’s see it. Jurkovec and the rest of the receivers and tight ends should have a huge day and get the rust off. I’m calling a 30-point first half. 2. Establish the run: BC won’t NEED the run against Colgate, but entering the season it is the…

Holy Cross preview: Holy Cross Crusaders (0-0) at UCONN Huskies (0-1)

Holy Cross: Crusaders in a good position to three-peat as Patriot League champs heading into 2021

Perhaps more so than any other college program in the area, Holy Cross gets overlooked far too much. A legitimate FCS contender every season now under head coach Bob Chesney, the Crusaders will hit the field at UConn on Saturday looking to open the season with a little bit of history. Holy Cross hasn’t beaten an FBS team since winning on the road at Army in 2002. It would be…
