The Jets and Seahawks executed the perfect football trade yesterday. The Jets traded defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and a 2018 seventh round pick to the Jets for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse and a second round pick in 2018.
The deal helps both teams fill two areas of concern. The Jets needed a veteran receiver to add depth to their receiving corp and Kearse fills that need. The Seahawks have been missing that disruptive interior presence in the middle of their 4-3 defense and now they have it with Richardson.
More importantly, the rebuilding Jets added a second round pick that they could use next spring as they continue to retool their roster.
Seattle was willing to part with the second rounder because they are in win now mode. That and Richardson is an elite talent who is worth giving up future draft capital.
In the short term, this deal favors the Seahawks. Long term, it could favor the Jets if they get an impact player with the second rounder they got in the deal. Either way, both teams will benefit from the trade.
