Opinion: ESPN’s Hiring of Rex Ryan was Inevitable

By John Sarianides

ESPN announced today that they have hired Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan to a multi-year deal. Ryan will be featured on Sunday Countdown as well as other NFL platforms.

I can’t say I am surprised that the four letter network giant hired Ryan. You saw it coming after Ryan was fired by the Bills. Between his comments following his firing and his appearance on ESPN during the Super Bowl, you had a feeling Ryan was destined for Bristol.

There is a good chance Ryan never coaches again. Why should he? He is still getting paid by the Bills and he probably got a seven figure deal from ESPN. Why rush back to the sidelines if you are Ryan? It doesn’t make any sense. Instead, you can get paid to bloviate about football and not worry about wins and losses and the stress that comes with it.

Give Ryan credit. He parlayed talking nonsense and smack during his coaching career into a television gig. It looks like he knew what he was doing after all. Good for him. Why not? If you can’t beat them on the field, you might as well get paid to talk about them off the field.

Hey, if nothing else, Ryan will make Sunday Countdown more interesting. It wasn’t exactly riveting television last season.
