NFL At Large: Doc’s Thoughts on Day One of Free Agency.

The Jags have committed over $120 million dollars into two players that quite frankly, aren’t worth it.

1. I can’t believe Malik Jackson got 6 years and $90 million from the Jags. $42 million of it is guaranteed. He’s a good player but he’s not worth $15 million a season! NO WAY!

2. Oh and then Jags GM David Caldwell decides to give running back Chris Ivory a 5 year deal worth over $30 million dollars. That’s an awful contract for an overrated running back. It must be nice to play with someone else’s money.

3. Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie isn’t messing around. The league year hasn’t even officially started and he signed the best offensive lineman on the market in Kelechi Osemele and linebacker Bruce Irvin to pair up Khalil Mack. The Raiders overpaid for both but both are in their prime and they fill immediate needs.

4. Kudos to Ben Watson for parlaying a good season with the Saints into a two year, $8 million dollar deal. I thought he might come back to New England but there was a better deal out there for him.

5. The Dolphins gave Mario Williams a two year, $16 million dollar deal and are rescinding the transition tag on Olivier Vernon. I can’t say I’m surprised. It’s the Dolphins! They do stupid things all the time. That’s why they’re the Dolphins.

6. The Giants overpaid for Janoris Jenkins big time at five years, $62.5 million dollars but they had to. Their secondary was awful last season. With Jenkins and Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, the G-Man have one of the best starting cornerback tandems in the league.

7. So much for guys not wanting to play in San Diego. Not only did the Bolts re-sign Antonio Gates but they picked up coverage buster Travis Benjamin. He’ll give them the vertical threat they’ve lacked the last two seasons.

8. I don’t think Marvin Jones is worth $8 million a season but the Lions are desperate to replace Calvin Johnson so they had to over pay him.

9. Safeties are getting big money. Both Robert McLeod (Eagles) and George Iloka (re-signed with the Bengals) got over $30 million dollars. That’s a lot of dough for two safeties that good in run support but suspect in coverage.

10. The Dolphins, Eagles trade for Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso is complete. The two teams will swap first round picks. The Eagles now have the eighth pick and the Dolphins have the 13th pick in the first round plus Alonzo and Maxwell. Are you kidding me? So the Dolphins will end up with three starters out of this deal. Dumb deal by Philly in my opinion.
