NFL: 3 Reasons Why Jay Cutler is a Better Fit for the Dolphins Than Colin Kaepernick

By John Sarianides

The Miami Dolphins signed retired quarterback Jay Cutler to a one year, $10 million dollar contract today.

The move comes after it was determined that Ryan Tannehill will more than likely need surgery on his torn ACL.

Of course there is already backlash to the Dolphins signing Jay Cutler and not free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Well, before Camp Kap starts throwing out terms like racism and black balled, let me give you three reasons why the Dolphins signed Cutler.

1. Cutler Knows Gase and the System: Jay Cutler already knows Adam Gase’s system from his time in Chicago with Gase. Kaepernick would have to learn the offense. That would slow the Dolphins down offensively and set them back a bit. Cutler can step right in and play right away.

2. Cutler Has Had Success in Gase’s Offense: Cutler played well in Gase’s system in 2015, throwing 21 touchdown passes and only 11 interceptions. Gase did a great job of putting Cutler in a position to succeed by getting the ball out of his hands quickly and minimizing any risks he took. While Cutler’s 2015 numbers don’t “jump out” at you, they were pretty good considering he threw 18 interceptions in 2014.

3. Gase Has Coached Cutler Before: The two men genuinely like each other. Cutler can be a bit mercurial but he and Gase hit it off in Chicago and they worked well together. Just like Peyton Manning, Gase sees Cutler as one of his guys.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people think Kaepernick is better than Cutler, others think Cutler is better than Kaepernick. .Adam Gase ultimately felt more comfortable with Cutler as his quarterback. In the end, that is all that matters.
