Thanks to an improbable finish and a win over the Saints, the Minnesota Vikings travel to Philadelphia to battle the Eagles for the right to play in Super Bowl LII.
Both teams feature defenses that ranked in the top ten in total defense during the regular season. Both defenses can also pressure the quarterback on a consistent basis. Rushing the passer has been the basis of their success defensively.
The quarterback match up has been talked about a lot this week leading up to this game but Nick Foles and Case Keenum can only affect the outcome of this game if they turn the ball over. Both quarterbacks have to manage the game and allow their respective running games and defenses to win this game for them.
Here are three keys for both teams.
3 Keys for the Vikings
1. Win the Line of Scrimmage: It’s all about running the ball and stopping the run for the Vikings. Minnesota must control the line of scrimmage for four quarters if they want to win this game.
2. Move the Pocket for Keenum: The Eagles front four can generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. That is why Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur must move the pocket for Keenum. Get him out of harms way by utilizing designed naked boot legs and sprint passes. If Keenum has to sit in the pocket, make reads and hold onto the ball, he’ll get hit a lot.
3. Disguise and Defend the RPO’s: The Vikings must disguise their blitzes and coverages and confuse Nick Foles. Foles is at his best when the Eagles utilize RPO’S (run, pass options) Minnesota must get their run fits and bait Foles into bad reads. The Eagles cannot win this game if Foles throws the ball 30 times in the three and five step passing game. They need him to be effective with the RPO’s.
3 Keys for the Eagles
1. Get Ajayi Going Early: The Eagles need to establish their running game early. It is imperative that they take pressure off of Foles by running the football and controlling the line of scrimmage. Look for Ajayi to be featured Early by the Eagles.
2. Win One on One’s in the Secondary: The Eagles secondary has played well at this season but they do have a tendency to give up big plays at times. Minnesota’s receiving corp is skilled and can make big plays over the top. The Eagles pass rush has protected this secondary all season long but they won’t get to Keenum on every play. When they don’t, the Eagles young corners must hold up one on one down the field.
3. Foles Must Play Well: The Eagles will not win this game if Foles struggles. It’s really that simple. Their running game and defense are good enough to keep them in the game but Philadelphia cannot win this game unless Foles makes some big plays in the passing game.
Final Prediction: Vikings 21 Eagles 17: I expect a tight game that will come down to one of the quarterbacks making a play down the stretch to win it for their team. I trust Case Keenum more than Nick Foles and that is why I am taking the Vikings as a road favorite in this game. The Vikings will be the first team in NFL history to play in the Super Bowl as the home team.
