What a first weekend. Some interesting results, and a fun way to get going, really all over New England. Not as many top games this weekend, but we will still take a look at some of them. Feels like the luster is off a few matchups based on what we saw last week.

That said, still some barnburners here, and we expect some great games.

Let’s get to it . . .

Catholic Memorial at Cardinal Newman (Fla.) — This may be the premier out-of-state game involving a Massachusetts team this year. Cardinal Newman is a top 30 or so team in Florida, and will be a handful for CM. Credit the Knights for taking on this challenge.

Central Catholic at St. John’s Prep — This age-old rivalry is one of the best nonleague tussles in New England every year. The Prep is coming in with a victory over Marshfield last week, while Central lost to Springfield Central. This is always a great take.

Springfield Central at Iona Prep (NY) — Yet another tremendous out-of-state matchup. Springfield Central looked like it hadn’t skipped a beat in Sunday’s win over Central Catholic. You can make the argument that Iona Prep is the best program in New York right now.

Chelmsford at Andover — Andover made a statement with its blowout win over Shrewsbury last week. Chelmsford is coming off a tough loss to a good Londonderry (NH) team. That said, the Lions are still dangerous and have one of the top OL in the state in Thomas Brown.

Foxboro at North Attleboro — This Friday, these teams from opposite sides of the Hockomock League will do battle at North’s HS. These teams usually face off at Community Field, but this is a compelling matchup no matter where you play it.

Marshfield at Methuen — A year ago, these teams battled and Methuen came away with a 38-28 win. These are two of the best offenses you will find. Methuen lost to Lincoln-Sudbury last week, while Marshfield dropped one to the Prep. Take the over.

Duxbury at Mansfield — Another showdown between two prestigious programs who are each 0-1 heading into this weekend. Duxbury lost to Hanover, but is still dangerous. Mansfield fell to a loaded CM team, and this is a much more even matchup.

King Philip at Marblehead — King Philip was extremely impressive in dispatching a good Walpole team in the first week. Marblehead lost to Bishop Fenwick, but we believe the Magicians will be heard from in D4. That said, KP is the favorite here.

Lincoln-Sudbury at Needham — Lincoln-Sudbury had one of the best wins of Week 1 when the Warriors took down Methuen. Needham is a team that’s still a little underrated, but is coming off a big victory over Natick. L-S returns a ton from last year and is flying high.

Reading at BC High — Is BC High back? After a couple of losing seasons, BC High jumped out the gates with a win over LaSalle (RI). Reading lost the opening week to Melrose, but just by a point. This could come down to the final minutes.

Northampton at Westfield — Westfield opened with a win and has some experience as one of the top programs in Western Mass. Northampton had a good 2022, but lost a lot. This game should tell us a little bit about each team, but Westfield returns more.

Shelton at Cheshire — Both of these teams are coming off nice wins over strong programs in the first week: Shelton over New Canaan and Cheshire over Ridgefield. Keep an eye on Shelton QB Michael Kinik, who throws a pretty ball.

Thornton Academy at Bonny Eagle — Although Thornton Academy is 0-2 and Bonny Eagle is 2-0, those two Trojans losses are by one score each, and this is usually a fun game. Thornton Academy would like nothing better than to hand Bonny Eagle its first defeat.

Pinkerton at Timberlane — Pinkerton is 2-0 and Timberlane is 1-1. The Astros are tough to defend with their Wing-T, and they look like one of the best teams in the Granite State the first two weeks. Timberlane has some momentum with a win over Spaulding last week.

North Kingstown at Bishop Hendricken — As we saw in the Northeast 7v7 this summer, North Kingstown has an excellent group of skill players. This team is coming off a win over a good Portsmouth team. Hendricken is always there at the end, and comes in off a win over Kellenberg Memorial (NY).

Colchester at Essex — For Vermont, Essex is a D1 team that has wins over Rutland and Burlington/South Burlington so far. Colchester is in D2 and stands at 1-0. Essex is probably the favorite at this juncture, but Colchester no doubt can make this interesting.
