NEFJ Nuggets from Patriots training camp – Day 16

The Patriots were in full pads on Sunday after a walkthrough on Saturday. Here are some observations from what was a good practice.

Weather: Cloudy, 68 Degrees

Practice Type: Full Pads

Wolf Press Conference Highlights

On Mathew Judon

EW: “Yeah, like I said on the broadcast, all these decisions are difficult. We have to weigh now, the future, what’s best for the team, what’s best for the player, and it was something that we just felt organizationally, and for Matthew, it was probably the best for both parties.”

“Teams had been calling to check in. He had voiced a little bit of displeasure with his contract at different times. So, whenever that happens, teams always check in on players. So, it’s just kind of something that came to fruition there at the end.”

On the offensive line

EW: “Again, we’re pretty comfortable with our group right now. Obviously, we’re going to look to upgrade on the offensive line or at any position, if we feel like we can. But I think we gave up one sack the other night. Again, it was Philly’s two’s, but it was an improvement to the practice on Tuesday. So, again, we’re just looking to see how these guys respond to adverse situations.”

On Drake Maye

EW: “Yeah, it was good to see him get in the other night. It was really good to see how calm and collected he was. He got headbutted at one point by Nolan Smith and made a nice play on that one, but he’s steadily improved. He’s put his head down and worked. He’s a great teammate, and we’re excited to see where his development can go.”

We’ll have to see. Again, he didn’t get a lot of snaps like Greg said in the first game. He did pretty well in his snaps the other night. It’s all about building on those successes and seeing where it goes.”

Practice observations

  • Opened practice with a splash ball security drill where players had to slide on the ground while it was being soaked with a hose to recover a fumble.

  • The offense went to agilities stations for the skill guys after run and stretch. The offensive line went to individual petiod as did the defense.

  • Jonathan Jones was back and repped with the safeties during infividual.

  • Starting offensive line has been the same one as all of canp

Mafi, Henry, Diesch, Leverett rotated in.

-The mix in and matching of the offensive line continued. Scott Peters trying to find a combination that works.

  • Drake Maye had a good practice and is definitely building on what he has done the past two weeks. He is showing improved timing and anticipation.

  • A brief scuffle did break out during the team red zone period. Looked like Andrews and Godchaux might have been in the center of it.

  • The versatility of Daniel Ekuale and Jeremiah Pharms continues to be a positive. They both can play end or tackle and were once again in both spots today.

  • Pop Douglas made several defenders miss in space on a catch over the middle in team. He continues to impress at practice.

  • The ground game was impressive during team period. The backs did a good job of pressing the hole and hitting the cut back.

-.Kawaan Baker made a terrific catch over Marcellas Dial on a fade. He caught it over the top of his helnet.

-K.J Osborn made back to back big catches in the same team period. Jacoby Brissett connected with him on a fade and Drake Maye hit him on a corner route.

  • Tight end Mitchell Wilcox got hurt and did not teturm to practice. Another blow for a tight end room that is thinning out.

  • The beneficiary of Wilcox absence was rookie Jaheim Bell who caught three touchdown passes during the red zone team period.
