Miss me with the Patriots running Drake Maye on designed runs

FOXBOROUGH- Breaking News! The Patriots ran their quarterback on designed runs in Tuesday’s practice during a red zone period. Both Drake Maye and back-up Josh Dobbs ran or had the pocket moved for them on Day 6.

Does this mean the Patriots will run the quarterback more this season? Ehhh…maybe. Patriots fans are clamoring for more designed runs for Maye specifically and while they got a taste of it on Tuesday, I highly doubt the Patriots will be running Maye by design as much as people think.

Dobbs was asked on Tuesday after practice why the team ran the quarterbacks and he said that McDaniels wants to capitalize on the athleticism of the quarterbacks.

“Josh has explained he wants to use our skill set at the QB position as another way to keep the defense on their heels. Obviously, situationally if we need it, we will be able to pull it out and make plays with our legs. Outside of that, we want to call the right play to pick defenses apart. We want forward momentum.”

In theory, running the quarterback makes sense. It is hard on the defense when they have to account for him as a ball carrier. This also hard on the quarterback as they take a beating when they run the ball. In a pass first league, you want to protect quarterback as much as possible. Especially when they have a recent concussion history like Maye did last season.

Both Maye and Dobbs are instinctual runners who like to put it down and take off when things break down. Maye especially is going to run anyway even if it isn’t by design.

I do not mind having some zone read stuff with a built in tight end log block being used in the red zone. What I do not want to see is Maye running quarterback power four or five times a game. That I have a problem with.

The Patriots have also been running RPO’s at practice as well. I would rather they focus on that then running offense the quarterback. Especially given the amount they are going to run the football. It makes sense to have a built in screens and pass concepts married to the running game.

I know it sounds like I am babying Maye but let’s face it. You are only as good as your quarterback play in the NFL. Maye has franchise quarterback potential. He needs to develop and more importantly, he needs to stay healthy. A player’s best ability is their availability.

I would rather see the Patriots develop Maye more along the same lines as the Los Angeles Chargers are developing Justin Herbert and less like the Buffalo Bills developed Josh Allen. He needs to be a pure pocket passer first and let him run when he needs to.

While many have compared Maye to Allen, he is not Josh Allen. Allen is from another planet. He’s a monster physically. Physically, Maye is a more athletic version of Steve Grogan than he is Josh Allen. The Patriots don’t need Maye to be a dual threat quarterback. They need him to be a franchise quarterback.

It is why I would rather they not run him that much and develop him as a passer. If nothing else, he will play longer.

Miss me with the Drake Maye running quarterback stuff. I am out!
