McDaniels Addresses Patriots Offense, Maye’s Development, and Stefon Diggs’ Return

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels addressed the media on Monday, June 2nd, 2025, providing insights into the ongoing progress of the Patriots’ offense during OTA sessions, the development of young quarterback Drake Maye, and the notable return of wide receiver Stefon Diggs to voluntary workouts.

McDaniels, in his third stint as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator under new head coach Mike Vrabel, expressed confidence in the direction of the unit. He highlighted the collaborative nature of the coaching staff, emphasizing that they are incorporating “new wrinkles” and ideas from various backgrounds to create a more dynamic and productive offense. “We’re putting plays in today that I don’t have much experience doing, but I know that they’re good for our team,”

McDaniels also acknowledged the value of diverse perspectives within the coaching staff. He underlined the importance of learning from his colleagues and harnessing that collective wisdom to generate “more points, more yards, more first downs, and hopefully good plays.”

A significant portion of the press conference focused on the highly anticipated development of second-year quarterback Drake Maye. McDaniels praised Maye’s work ethic and adaptability, stating, “[Maye] is doing a really good job of digesting information, processing the corrections when there is a correction to be made, and going out there with a great attitude.” He stressed that Maye is on a “natural progression for a rookie,” quickly learning from mistakes and demonstrating a strong desire to improve. This positive assessment bodes well for the future of the Patriots’ offense, with McDaniels reiterating the goal of maximizing the quarterback position’s output on every play.

The return of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to voluntary OTAs after a period of absence was also a key topic. McDaniels confirmed Diggs’ presence and participation in workouts, dispelling concerns about his commitment. “I stay in contact with Stefon,” McDaniels stated, drawing on their past relationship from their time together in Minnesota. He expressed no concern about Diggs’ understanding of the system, indicating that the conversations between them and the club would remain private.

Diggs, who signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots in March, is currently working his way back from a torn ACL that cut short his 2024 season. McDaniels’ comments suggest the team is confident in his rehabilitation and integration into the offense.

Offensive line coach Doug Marrone also met with the media and echoed McDaniels’ sentiments about the collaborative approach and the emphasis on streamlined language to help players grasp the new system.

McDaniels’ press conference painted a picture of an offensive unit actively building trust and cohesion, with a strong focus on developing its young talent and integrating new ideas to improve performance in the upcoming 2025 season. The addition of key players like Stefon Diggs further adds to the optimism surrounding the Patriots’ offensive outlook.
