Maye hard on himself, but teammates will rally around him

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – Drake Maye sat quietly at his locker until the majority of his teammates were already heading to the busses.

This one hurt…a lot.

Maye threw three interceptions, including a game-ending pick in the final 30 seconds in the end zone with the Pats in field goal range to tie the game, ultimately handing Seattle a 13-10 win.

As badly as he felt postgame, his teammates will always have his back.

I spoke with Will Campbell in the locker room and asked him what the message is to the unquestioned leader of the franchise.

“Man, I told him we’re riding with him every day of the week and twice on Sunday,” he said. “There’s nobody else anybody in this locker room would want pulling the trigger for us. We’re with him and we love him.

“We’ve always got his back.”

Maye was clearly dejected during his postgame press conference as well. Acknowledging that he let his teammates down on Wednesday night.

He plans on earning their trust back, not that he’s really lost it after one game.

“It was just unacceptable,” Maye said of the final throw. “We had a chance to send it to overtime at the worst and the only thing you can do is turn the ball over and that’s what I did…you’ve got to stick together and that starts with me getting back to work and having the right intention in practice.

“These guys are here for me. I think they’ve done a great job of supporting me and having my back, so I gotta earn their trust. I know I have their trust, but I’ve gotta keep on putting better football out there. It’s Week 1, but at the same time, you can say there’s a full season ahead, but you’ve got to get this going early.

“We’ve got to start off on the right foot. I know what we had last year, but we’ve got a new season, a new team and we need to build that.”

It was only one night in September, but the Patriots – especially Maye – now have an opportunity to show some early resilience 11 days from now.
