Mac is back and no one should be surprised that he is starting today

Apparently benching Mac Jones during a two minute situation in Germany did not spell the end of his Patriots career.

According to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, Jones is expected to start today against the Giants in New York.

NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry reported on Friday that Jones and Zappe split starter reps this past week but no one in the building knew who was going to start today. Well, now we know. The mystery has been solved.

The entire region was whipped into a frenzy two weeks ago when Jones was benched but like it or not, he remains the Patriots best option to start because he is the best quarterback on the roster.

Jones will be the starter the rest of this season. Of course he could get pulled for poor performance at anytime but Bill Belichick and Bill O’Brien will ultimately come back to him because they have no other choice.

The Patriots waived veteran third string quarterback Will Grier yesterday to open up a roster spot for offensive tackle Conor McDermott who was signed to the 53 man roster. For those of you hoping to see Grier get a chance, the dream is over. He never did enough in practice to play his way into starter reps.

If you were hoping to not see Jones take another snap for the Patriots this season, sorry. He is back as the starter and he will stay the starter for the foreseeable future.

When I mean foreseeable future, I mean possibly into next season as well. Depending on what happens with Bill Belichick, Jones could conceivably be the team’s starting quarterback heading into next season. Especially if the Patriots move on from Belichick and hire an offensive head coach.

Mac is back! He was never going to be benched permanently. He remains the Patriots best option if they want to win any of their remaining games. Like it or not.
