Bill Belichick has a lot of decisions to make this off-season. At the top of the list is figuring what to do with Matt Patricia and whether or not he gets to keep his job as the play caller on offense. Patricia was not officially the offensive coordinator and given the underwhelming performance of the offense this past season, there is plenty of cause to move on from him and hire an offensive coordinator.
Former offensive coordinator and Penn State and Houston Texas Coach Bill O’Brien has long been rumored as a possible replacement but whether it is him or someone else, what happens to Matt Patricia if Belichick does indeed make a change?
The same can be said about quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator Joe Judge. What happens to him if Belichick decides to overhaul the offensive staff?
I personally do not think Belichick would fire either one. He groomed them as NFL coaches. I highly doubt he would get rid of two trusted assistants that he developed. So if Belichick doesn’t fire them, what happens?
I think ultimately Patricia either becomes the offensive line coach or he ends up in the front office in some capacity. He could also end up in a research role like Ernie Adams but I highly doubt that is what he will do. He has been a head coach and has front office experience. He will have a bigger role than Adams did.
As for Judge, I think the natural landing spot for him would special teams. One has to assume that current special teams coach Cam Achord is probably on his way out although with Belichick, you never know. If Belichick does make a change, moving Judge back makes the most sense.
Belichick could also make one of them assistant head coach and have them help him run the team. Both have been head coaches so it plausible. I can also see Belichick holding on to that title and giving it to Jerod Mayo as a way to entice him to stay in New England.
Either way, changes to the Patriots staff are coming. It will be interesting to see what happens to Patricia and Judge.
