Kyle Williams learning to get on the same page with Drake Maye

FOXBOROUGH- Patriots rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams has been very impressive thus far in training camp. He has showcased his big play speed and athleticism on a daily basis. He has made several wow plays that have caught the attention of his coaches, teammates and fans alike.

On Thursday, Williams met with the media after the team’s walkthrough and answered several questions regarding his camp experience thus far.

I asked Williams specifically how the transition has been going from a spread offense in college to Josh McDaniels offense which is more in depth and complicated. Williams says there are some similarities but the system is different and it is important to focus in on the details.

“Just the details, you know, I feel like the details separate you and it creates a lot of separation in your route. So if you hone into the details that could turn you from good to great. So I’m just paying attention to all the details, techniques, and the fundamentals of it all.”

The Patriots offense is notorious for being tough on wide receivers. They have to get on the same page with the quarterback when it comes to pre-snap and post-snap route adjusts to coverage. There is a certain run and shoot element to the post snap route adjustments. Williams says that it is on him to get on the same page with quarterback Drake Maye.

“Just obviously getting in my playbook and Drake being able to trust me to know that I’m doing my job, knowing that I know the plays. I know the routes and where I’m supposed to be in certain looks, so, just having that continuous reps of looking over the playbook, I think is good for us.”

Williams has been on the same page with Maye all training camp long and it has shown in practice. The chemistry was developed in minicamp and it has clearly carried over to training camp. The two connected on a 40 yard bomb in Wednesday’s practice.

Williams says he was brought to New England to make plays like that. He said when he is asked to make a play, he will make it.

“They asked me to make plays. I go make plays and when the ball is in the air, you have to go get it. You try to make the most of those opportunities.”

It is that attitude that has endeared Williams to his new teammates and has Patriots fans excited about his potential.
