A pair of mainstays for the Patriots the nine years are moving on. Cornerback Jonathan Jones and defensive end Deatrich Wise have both signed one year deals with the Washington Commanders.
Terms of Jones deal were not disclosed. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn in 2016, Jones quickly established himself as a regular contributor with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowls and starting 71 total games.
Jones started 14 of 17 games — last season, recording 58 tackles with six pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
The 31-year-old Jones played both cornerback and safety during his time in New England. He primarily played in the slot but also played field cornerback on the outside as well.
Jones sent Patriots fans a heart felt goodbye on his Instagram page on Wednesday night.
Wise spent eight seasons with the Patriots after getting drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Arkansas. He played in 126 career games with the Patriots. He accumulated 34 sacks in his career.
Wise best season in a Patriots uniform came in 2022 when he finished with 7.5 sacks. He won his only Super Bowl title during his second year with the team in 2018, starting five of 16 games and finishing with 4.5 sacks.
Both Jones and Wise were respected by their teammates, the organization and the media who covered their careers here. Their departure will leave a leadership void for sure.
