Jermaine Wiggins out at Brockton

Almost as soon as it began, the Jermaine Wiggins Era at Brockton High has come to a close.

Wiggins, tagged in the spring to succeed coach Peter Colombo, has resigned after one season leading the Boxers.

The Boxers went 3-8 in Wiggins’ only season, a year after the team went 9-2. This fall’s team started 1-5, and had blowout losses to Barnstable, Andover, and Pinkerton Academy (NH).

Word began to leak out last week that Wiggins had stepped down. However, despite attempts to find out more, neither Wiggins nor anyone from Brockton responded.

Today, the Brockton Enterprise ran a story in which school district administrators confirmed that Wiggins had indeed resigned.

Wiggins is a sports media personality who played for the Patriots and won a Super Bowl ring. He played high school ball at East Boston, and continued his career as a tight end for Georgia.

Since his playing career ended, Wiggins has made a living as a radio host, now at WEEI.

His hire at Brockton raised a few eyebrows. Wiggins had zero coaching experience, either as a head coach or an assistant.

Wiggins was hired late in the process, and started a lineup that was heavy on underclassmen. Even with a young team, it was somewhat unexpected that the team struggled to the degree it did.

But now that’s over, and Brockton is back to square one.
