Instant analysis on Patriots signing of T Morgan Moses

When Ronnie Stanley went off the board over the weekend, staying in Baltimore, the Patriots quickly had to pivot.

It’s a word Mike Vrabel used a lot when meeting the media at the scouting combine down in Indy and the Patriots have had to pivot quite a bit early on in free agency with guys like Stanley, Tee Higgins, Chris Godwin, DK Metcalf and others no longer fitting in the plans.

One of those pivot options for much-needed offensive tackle help was Morgan Moses, who will reportedly sign a three-year, $24 million dollar contract that could end up being worth $28.5 million. Moses is 34, which explains why the number wasn’t outrageous given some of the contracts that are being agreed to so far.

Moses will be entering his 12th NFL season when he arrives in Foxborough. He’s played the majority of his career at right tackle, so this signing feels like the best indicator so far that New England will be going with either Will Campbell or Membou with the fourth overall pick, unless they happen to have a choice to make between Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter, which still feels unlikely.

The 6’4,” 318lbs. Richmond, Virginia native was drafted by the (then) Redskins in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft. The most impressive thing Moses has done in his career has been showing up to work almost every Sunday, playing in 166 games. He played in 14 each of the last two seasons, but played all 17 in 2021 and 2022 and played in all 16 from 2015-2020.

Moses has been in Washington (7 years), New York with the Jets (2021 and 2024) and Baltimore (2022-2023) and immediately gives the Patriots some veteran leadership and experience to a unit that needs it, especially with rumors of David Andrews possibly being out in Foxborough.
