The Patriots signed veteran cornerback Carlton Davis to a three year, $60 million dollar deal. Davis is going to get $34.5 million guranteed. A pure man to man cover corner, Davis has been one of the top corners in the NFL the past four seasons.
Last season, Davis posted the seventh-lowest completion percentage allowed as the nearest defender in man coverage (45.2), per Next Gen Stats. He had a 74.5 grade according to PFF, the highest of his career. The 28 year old Davis bet on himself after last season but failed to land a big contract. After having a career year with the Lions last season, Davis finally cashes and he will play opposite Chritian Gonzalez forming one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL.
The 6’1 205 pound Davis has elite man coverage skills. He is physical in press coveraged and does a good job of redirecting receivers and maintaining hip position vertically down the field. He can play on the outside and in the slot depending on the package on the field. He will field corner for the Patriots.
Davis was a 2018 second round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Auburn. He was a first team All-SEC his first three seasons at Auburn and he was an All-American his final season on the plains.
Davis has 11 career interceptions to his credit to go with 380 career tackles, four forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
