The NFL suspended Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell for three games yesterday for failing to comply with the league’s drug testing policy. Bell was originally suspended for four games but the NFLPA negotiated to reduced the suspension to three .
Why did the NFL reduce the suspension? Who knows? Your guess is as good as mine. When it comes to discipline, the NFL is all over the map. Giants kicker Josh Brown assaulted his ex-wife and he only got one game. Tom Brady is accused of tampering with footballs and he gets four games. It’s senseless!
I’m convinced Roger Goodell has a suspension wheel in his office. Whenever an incident occurs, he examines it, spins the suspension wheel and wherever it stops, he goes with that punishment.
If the players don’t push for an independent discipline arbitrator in 2020, they are incompetent! I think they will and that insistence could lead to a lock out.
The discipline system is broken in the NFL and it needs to be fixed. Arbitrarily reducing Bell’s suspension while not considering a reduction for Brady is baffling to me. Then again, it’s not a surprise. Goodell is a rogue commissioner who is morphing into a mob boss with each passing day.
In the end, it’s partially the players fault. They wanted more money in 2011 so they gave the commish more power over discipline and now they are paying for it.
