Whenever Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney is asked about leaving the program for another job or having his staff members poached, he’s remained consistent with his response.
If people weren’t interested in him or his staff, then he’s probably not doing a good job and the team probably isn’t winning. Well, when an NFL team comes calling for your offensive coordinator, something’s got to be going right.
On Saturday, Matt Zenitz of On3Sports reported that the New York Giants were hiring Smith as their new assistant offensive line coach. Zenitz also reported that the Crusaders are planning on elevating QB coach Dean Kennedy into the open OC role. Smith has been an integral part of Holy Cross’ rise to national championship contender status. Over the last six seasons, Smith has served as the offensive line coach, run game coordinator and recruiting coordinator before taking over OC duties. Last season, the Crusaders finished eighth in all of FCS football in scoring offense.
This move is obviously a fantastic opportunity for Coach Smith, but it also does wonders for the Holy Cross program and speaks volumes about where it currently stands. To Chesney’s point, the fact that an NFL organization is now willing to pluck a member of the staff from little old Worcester, MA is a testament to the progress the program has made over the years. While Chesney’s name will always remain a popular one during each coaching cycle, you’re going to start seeing more and more names head out to different jobs at both the FBS and NFL level.
Crusaders fans can be disappointed about so many talented coaches eventually leaving, but on the flip side, it also means the program is in arguably the best shape its been in since the 80’s. Nobody likes change, but if it means continued success for the boys in purple and white, then by all means, folks should want the revolving door to remain active.
Oh, and by the way, don’t be surprised if Smith is calling plays for the G-Men within three years.
