Nose tackle Davon Godchaux met the media after practice today and the number one topic of course was his newly signed contract extension. Godchaux openly talked about the extension he signed on Tuesday and why he deserved.
Godchaux says his wife made him realize that you don’t always get what you want but he thankful for it. What Godchaux got was a two year extension for $21 million dollars. $16.5 million guaranteed. It is a raise for the veteran nose tackle, something he wanted because of the position he plays.
Last week Godchaux said it was about respect and he clarified what he meant by that today.
“It’s about guaranteed money. The position I play is brutal. Getting double teamed all the time, always getting hit. I am glad we just got it done.”
Guaranteed money aside, Godchaux wanted the stability that comes with a contract extension. He is the tenth Patriot extended this off-season by Eliot Wolf and the front office.
Godchaux was asked about Matthew Judon and whether or not he would be the next Patriot to get an extension. Godchaux is hopeful that Judon gets his bag next.
“Still want to see my brother Matthew Judon get his contract. We all know it’s a business but he deserves a new contract, we are all pulling for him. He is a relentless pass rusher for the past three years. We came in together. I would love to keep dealing with him.”
One person who is happy to have Godchaux under contract for two more years is Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo addressed Godchaux’s extension before practice.
“Look, that was a long process, but I’m glad we got that deal finished. Once again, it goes to the point of we want to sign players that we know still have good ball in them.”
Godchaux still has good football left in him. He is a top five nose tackle in the NFL and now he is being compensated as one.
