Former Patriots tight end Don Hasselbeck passed away on Monday at the age of 70. Hasselbeck’s son Matt broke the news on social media last night. Hasselbeck died after suffering cardiac arrest at his home.

“He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller,” Matt Hasselbeck wrote on social media. “Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family.”

Hasselbeck was drafted in the second round by the Patriots in 1977 after an All-American college career at Colorado. He spent six seasons with the Patriots and led the team in receptions in 1981 with 46. He finished that season with 808 yards receiving and six touchdowns.

Hasselbeck was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders prior to the start of the 1983 season and helped them win the Super Bowl. He caught two touchdown passes in the regular season for the Raiders. Hasselbeck blocked an extra point attempt in the Raiders 38-9 Super Bowl victory against the Washington Redskins.

Hasselbeck spent the following season with the New York Giants and had a TD catch in a playoff win over the San Francisco 49ers. He finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985.

Hasselbeck finished his career with 107 receptions for 1,542 yards and 18 touchdowns in 123 career regular-season games.

His sons Matt and Tim followed in his footsteps. Both played in the NFL. They played quarterback at Xaverian High School and then collegiately at Boston College. Matt went on to have a Pro Bowl NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks making three Pro Bowl appearances and playing in Super Bowl XL. Tim was a career back up quarterback for the Eagles, Redskins, Giants and Cardinals.
