First & Ten: Ten Thoughts About What’s Going On in the World of Football

By John Sarianides

1. Is it a surprise the Giants cut Victor Cruz? He was due to make $10 million next season. It was only a matter of time.

2. The Giants are also releasing starting running back Rashad Jennings. The move will save them about $2.5 million. Jennings is not a loss. He’s been wildly inconsistent throughout his time with the Giants.

3. Dan Quinn shaking up his staff is a bit peculiar to me. It almost seems as if he’s blaming them for the Falcons collapse in Super Bowl. I still think Quinn and Shanahan are to blame for the Falcons collapse. They mismanaged the game, not the position coaches.

4. I like Texas Tech quarterback Pat Mahomes physically but I don’t think he’s a top ten pick. Whoever is pushing this story is just spreading fake news.

5. The 49ers are interested in signing two veteran quarterbacks when free agency opens next month. I buy this rumor but I also think San Francisco is trying to drive up the value of North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

If the Niners give the illusion that they are not interested in Trubisky, teams might be more willing to trade up for him.

6. Speaking of the 49ers. Former Niners great and long time assistant coach Tom Rathman will not be returning to the organization. Kyle Shanahan is bringing veteran running backs coach Bobby Turner with him from Atlanta.

How do you not keep Rathman? I get Shanahan and Turner go way back but come on.

7. Former Chiefs great Tony Gonzalez has chimed in on the Patriots skipping the White House ceremony and he thinks it’s silly. I agree but they have every right to do what they want.

8. Temple head coach Geoff Collins recently hired a S.W.A.G coordinator or Specialist with Advanced Graphics. I’m assuming the SWAG coordinator’s job is to promote the program? I’ll do more research.

9. Our thoughts are with Kansas State coach Bill Synder who was diagnosed with throat cancer over the weekend.

10. R.I.P Quentin Moses. Gone way too soon at 33 years old.
