First & Ten: 10 Thoughts on What is Going on in the Football World

Life lesson with Jameis was a major flop.

By John Sarianides

1. Jameis Winston has matured a lot over the last two years but he still has a lot of growing up to do. The Bucs might want to limit his speaking engagements.

2. Does Bears GM Ryan Pace know that Jay Cutler is untradeable? Yes. I made up a word to describe Cutler’s non-existent trade value. I’d be shocked if the Bears were offered anything for Cutler.
3. I would be shocked if Martellus Bennett were in a Patriots uniform next season. He got the ring. Now he is going to take that last big contract.
4. The Patriots will trade Jimmy Garoppolo. Again, there is no reason to hold onto him or extend him. That might make sense for the Patriots but not for Garoppolo.
5. The Tony Romo saga may carry into June. Dallas would take a substantially smaller cap hit if they released Romo is June. Releasing Romo in June wouldn’t be fair to him but the NFL is a business. I still don’t see a trade in Romo’s future. There is no market for him.
6. Kirk Cousins being traded to San Francisco is a possibility given how contentious negotiations have been with the Redskins.
7. The bottom is about to fall out at Ole Miss. I still think the school should part ways with Hugh Freeze. Start over!
8. While it’s great that Tom Herman is trying to change the “culture” at Texas, the reality is it won’t be hard. He has unlimited resources at his disposal. It’s not like he’s starting from the ground up with no support or resources.
People need to pump the brakes with the Tom Herman tongue bathing. It’s still early.
9. Adrian Peterson claims that he and the Vikings have not discussed his contract yet. Oh don’t you worry Adrian. You will soon enough.
10. The Bucs released cornerback Alterraun Verner yesterday. Verner signed a four year, $25.5 million dollar contract in 2014 but was a monumental bust. With Brent Grimes and Vernon Hargreaves firmly entrenched as the starting corners, the Bucs could move on from Verner.
