Fairfield Warde High School has named Steve Christy as the Mustangs’ new head coach. The move, announced this week, brings one of Connecticut’s most accomplished coaches recently back to the sidelines after a brief hiatus from coaching.

Christy arrives at Warde with a resume that commands immediate respect across the state. Most recently, he led the Masuk Panthers to a 27-10 record over three seasons, a tenure punctuated by a dramatic 2024 CIAC Class MM State Championship victory over top-seeded Windsor.

Christy’s reputation as a program-builder has preceded him during the hiring process, as the Fairfield community looked for a leader capable of elevating the Mustangs to “state powerhouse” status.

Christy’s ability to get the best out of his players was a hallmark of his time in Monroe, and Warde officials are betting that same spark will ignite a program hungry for consistent postseason contention.

Christy didn’t shy away from the high expectations that come with the job. He expressed immediate enthusiasm for the talent already present in the hallways of Fairfield Warde and the support system surrounding the team.

“I met a lot of the kids, so we’ve just got to get them out playing football,” Christy said following the announcement. “The kids are great. They want this. Everybody here wants to win and nobody wants to win more than me.”

Christy also emphasized the importance of the wider school community in building a successful program. He acknowledged that while the players and coaches do the work on the field, the culture is established by the families and faculty who support them. Addressing the local community, he noted his excitement to get to work.

“I’m not nervous. I’m excited. This is what I do… God works in mysterious ways. I was just waiting for the right opportunity.”

The Mustangs now head into the off-season with a championship-caliber leader at the helm. For Warde, the hire represents more than just a coaching change; it is a statement for the upcoming 2026 season.

With the Connecticut High School Football Alliance schedule already taking shape, Christy will have his work cut out for him in the highly competitive FCIAC, but his track record suggests he is more than ready for the challenge.
