FOXBORO – Duxbury made significant history at Gillette Stadium on Friday night.

The Dragons hammered Scituate 62-33 for a second straight D4 Super Bowl. The 62 points were the most ever in an MIAA state title game for a single team and the 95 combined points were the most ever for two teams in a Super Bowl.

Alex Barlow was a man amongst boys, rushing for 275 yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries. Trevor Jones had 158 yards passing and two touchdowns along with a rushing TD and Zach Falls had three catches for 121 yards and a score. As a team, Duxbury had 525 yards of total offense.

Scituate was led by Jackson Belsan’s 328 passing yards and three TD’s. Sam Allard also had 140 yards receiving. The Dragons finish 11-1 while the Sailors wrap up another impressive season at 9-4.

“That was certainly not in the plan,” Duxbury head coach Matt Landolfi said of his team scoring 62 points. “The kids just executed the game plan the coaching staff put together. The buy in from the kids…just proud of everybody on the staff and the players for putting the effort in this week and it showed today.”

“Not with our offense,” Barlow added with a smile when asked if he ever thought his team would put up that many points. “Not with how much we run the ball, but yeah.”

This was a rematch of the 2021 Super Bowl that Scituate won. That meeting had a total of just 29 points. The first half on Friday night had a combination of 48 points with the Dragons building a 20-point lead.

Scituate had a poor snap on a punt during the game’s first possession, handing Duxbury the ball at the Sailors’ 36. Seven plays later, Jones hit Adam Barr and Tiernan Sheehan added the PAT. After forcing another quick punt, Duxbury made it 13-0 when Jones found Falls for a 68 yard TD, but the PAT was no good.

Scituate responded just two plays later as Jackson Beslan hit Sam Allard for a 70 yard touchdown. Allard also added the PAT to make it 13-7. Sam Wien returned the ensuing kick off 92 yards for the Dragons to immediately make it a 14-point game again. Early in the second quarter, the Sailors capped an 11-play drive with a nine yard TD catch by Lawson Foley, cutting it to 20-14.

The Dragons put together a 10-play drive of their own that ended with a Jones seven yard TD run, set up by a 39 yard catch from Falls. Scituate turned it over on downs at the Dragons’ 21 on the next possession, and Duxbury turned it into more points as Alex Barlow rumbled in from a yard out in the closing seconds for a 34-14 lead at the break. Duxbury put up 273 yards of total offense in the first 24 minutes with Barlow accounting for 101 on the ground and Falls 107 receiving.

“It felt different,” Barlow acknowledged when asked if everything about this season felt different with a target on their collective backs. “We’re a different team this year. Last year we were pass heavy, this year we’ll punch you in the mouth and keep punching.”

“It’s strange. I could see some years…some classes would think about the past, but this crew did not think about the past at all,” Landolfi added. “They were all buying in. They wanted to prove their worth as seniors and I think they did that all year and tonight.”

Duxbury opened up the third quarter with another methodical drive and Barlow pushed it to 41-14 with another TD from a yard out. The alarming lack of defense continued just four plays later as Belsan hit Alex Burrill on a little swing pass and he did the rest, scampering 68 yards for a TD to keep the Sailors within 20.

Duxbury earned another turnover on downs with a 4th-&-4 stop at the Dragons’ 34 late in the third. After forcing a punt, Belsan hit Charlie Hartwell for a huge 41 yard play down deep into Duxbury territory. Two plays later, Will Robinson scampered around the left end for a 14 yard TD. The PAT was no good, making it 41-27.

With 7:43 remaining in the game, Barlow continued to run into and through Scituate defenders, scoring from three yards out for his third TD of the day to push the Dragons’ lead back to 48-27. Barlow added another from nine yards out, seemingly putting the game to bed. But, Scituate got a huge return from Robinson down to the one on the ensuing kickoff and Burrill punched it in on the next snap. Finally, with 3:38 to go, Barlow added one more TD run from 35 yards out.

Moments later, Finn Carley had a pick in the end zone and Jones kneeled it out before the Dragons stormed the field.

“It feels great,” added Barlow. “We rode our O-line this whole season. They played their butts off till the end. It just feels amazing.”
