Larry Fedora caused quite a stir with his comments last week.
With training camps across the NFL about to open in earnest this week, here are some thoughts on the week that was in football.
1. Many people scoffed at Larry Fedora’s comments last week at ACC Media Days but the reality is, he’s right. Football is not the only sport where you could suffer a concussion and end up with CTE.
Contrary to what some in the media might think, the game is under attack and football coaches have an obligation to make it safer for players while at the same time preserving the game.
2. Nick Saban’s experience will be put to the test with the impending quarterback competition between Jalen Hurts and Tua T. Saban has to play his cards right or the situation in Tuscaloosa could get ugly.
3. It is hard to believe that the Ravens and Bears are already in camp. Where does time go? The Hall of Fame game is a week from Thursday.
4. I am happy to see that assistants coaches in college football are finally getting compensated the way they should be. Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables has long been one of the best coordinators in the game. He deserves to get paid!
5. If the Chargers are going to re-sign Antonio Gates, they should probably do it soon. General manager Tom Telesco needs to stop bantering to the media about it and just re-sign Gates. The Bolts need him.
6. The Patriots finally signed first round pick Sony Michel to his rookie deal. It was getting a little tense there for a while.
7. According to Raiders coach Jon Gruden, extending outside linebacker Khalil Mack is the team’s number one priority right now. He’s right. Get it done Chucky! The Raiders can’t contend for a Super Bowl if Mack isn’t there. He is the most important player on the team. Yes, even more important than Derek Carr.
8. Johnny Manziel was traded from the Hamilton Tigers Cats to the Montreal Alouettes yesterday. Montreal has lost 15 of their last 16 games. They are terrible. At least Manziel has experience playing for a losing organization so that should get acclimated with his new team.
9. The Colts keep telling us Andrew Luck’s shoulder is fully healthy. I’ll believe it when I see it.
10. RIP Tony Sparano. A great coach but an even bette person. I know people that coached with Tony at Boston University and they all said the same thing. He was a great person.
