Trump and Eagles have a history of not getting a long.
1. Donald Trump pulling his White House invitation to the Eagles is a petty move. Regardless of whether or not some players wanted to go or not go, the team should still be invited. Some players had planned events around the visit. The decision to dis-invite the team was a political power play by the President. Trump missed out on a golden opportunity to meet with the players and help mend fences.
2. Tom Brady is reporting to Patriots mini-camp, I repeat! Tom Brady is reporting to Patriots mini-camp. There is a very good chance he says nothing of relevance to the media.
3. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of former 49ers great Dwight Clark who passed away yesterday at the age of 61 from ALS. Clark’s catch against the Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Championship game will forever be an iconic American sports moment.
4. The Oakland Athletics drafted Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the 9th overall selection in last night’s MLB Draft. Murray did announce in a conference call afterwards that he intends on playing football this fall.
Murray will honor his commitment to the Sooners for the 2018 season but speculation is, he intends to sign with the A’s after the season and pursue a career in baseball. It’s a smart move. He wouldn’t be a first round pick in the NFL. In fact, whether he plays quarterback or wide receiver at the next level, he probably wouldn’t go until day three in the NFL Draft at the earliest.
5. Five star wide receiver Jordyn Adams was drafted 17th overall by the Angels last night. Adams has committed to play football at North Carolina this fall where his father is the defensive line coach. Unlike Murray, I think Adams has a more difficult decision to make. He has the physical tools to be a top fifteen pick in the NFL Draft someday. He should play football and put off baseball for now but the money might be too much to pass up.
6. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are about to enter uncharted territory when it comes to his next contract. These negotiations could get dicey between the two sides. I have a piece coming on Rodgers and his future in Green Bay.
7. Former NFL quarterback and father of Andrew Luck, Oliver Luck was hired today as the new XFL commissioner and CEO. Luck will give the league some credibility but again, just like the AAF, Luck will have to clearly layout a long term vision for the league. I know Vince McMahon thinks the XFL is an alternative to the NFL but I still don’t think football fans will see it that way. They will not support a mediocre product. Same goes for the AAF. The product has to be good or no one will watch it, at home or in person.
8.Kudos to Nebraska coach Scott Frost for securing a commitment from Luke McCaffery, son of Ed McCaffery and brother of Christian McCaffery. McCaffery is an explosive dual threat quarterback who could thrive in Frost’s system.
9. The Nick Saban, Alabama boat story is just so bizarre, I don’t even know what to say about it.
10. Our thoughts are with Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair who collapsed last week at a strength and conditioning workout and is currently in critical but stable condition at a Baltimore hospital.
