Diggs returns & everything else that stood out during Monday’s OTA

FOXBOROUGH – On a day that felt like one of those perfect tailgate weather Sundays in September, the Patriots had their final voluntary Organized Team Activity on Monday afternoon.

Stefon Diggs returned, an undrafted rookie wide receiver continued to shine and one of the few guys left from the old regime went down. Here’s everything that stood out…

-Before Diggs arrived, coordinators Josh McDaniels, Zak Kuhr (in place of the currently absent Terrell Williams) and Jeremy Springer spoke before other assistant coaches spoke in mini scrums. Kuhr repeatedly emphasized that he is just an extension of Mike Vrabel and Williams’ messaging, nothing is changing. McDaniels had an interesting nugget about the complexity of the offense for a QB, saying it’s often very “overblown.” Couldn’t get over to Springer, but had a chance to chat with Doug Marrone along with a group of the other reporters. He’s happy with the way Will Campbell is progressing and with the line as a whole. He also added that Morgan Moses has been in the leadership role already, which was on display nearly 20 minutes after practice when he was working with Jack Conley and Demontrey Jacobs.

-Diggs was obviously the biggest news of the day and with good reason. The aura around the facility was simply different with a true No. 1 receiver on the field. Not only was he not wearing a knee brace, but he and Kayshon Boutte started every single drill during indy. The first drill was the most impressive, where guys (2 at a time) worked on quick cuts before going on a dead sprint about 20 yards up field, with the trail guy trying to catch the front guy. Diggs looked every bit the No. 1 guy just based on his footwork and rout-running alone. He was also pretty vocal as well at times. He did not participate in the ‘full speed’ team periods, but did do the walkthrough/half speed stuff and every individual drill. Before practice, he was also working closely with Ja’Lynn Polk on the sideline with hands and footwork the point of emphasis.

-Drake Maye and the offense had the best day (at least that we’ve seen) by far. The offense – especially the receivers – seemed to have a little bit of a jolt and swagger to them with Diggs out there, even if he wasn’t doing all the 11-on-11 stuff. Maye in particular was very accurate and had three ‘wow’ throws that were absolute dimes and the kind of throws you hope for from your franchise guy. The very first completion of the day in the first bit of half speed 11-on-11 went to Diggs. His pocket awareness and ability to climb before getting throws off was really impressive too. A great throw inside to Boutte in tight coverage, a well-timed hitch to Pop Douglas and an absolute pin-point ball down the left sideline to Rhamondre Stevenson were the highlights. Maye went 9-9 throughout the day after an early coverage sack and throw away.

-Pop and rookie undrafted FA Efton Chism III were the best wideouts on the day. Pop’s highlight of the afternoon came on a sick falling down/diving catch on a tipped ball, but he too looked more confident and explosive. Chsim caught all seven targets thrown his way among the quarterbacks and is a plucker of the football. He catches everything and shows an ability to immediately start getting up the field.

-TreVeyon Henderson continues to look the part. He was the recipient of another nice Maye ball on a swing early on and has incredibly quick-cutting ability. It’s not just the No. 32 on the jersey, but he reminds me a little of Antwan Smith from back in the day with his bulky build.

-Defensively, Keion White, Marcellas Dial Jr., K’Lavon Chaisson and Christian Elliss all had ‘would be’ sacks.

-Jahlani Tavai went down early in practice and was helped off the field by a couple teammates. Almost the entire defense on the field took a knee as both sidelines (O and D) while he was down for 2-3 minutes before coming off.

-Rookie kicker Andres Borregales went 4-4 on his kicks during the one competitive period while Parker Romo was 2-4.

-James Develin was at practice before attending the David Andrews retirement press conference later in the day.

Now, the team heads into the ‘mandatory’ part of the offseason with mini camp from Monday through Wednesday next week before getting the rest of the summer off prior to training camp.
