The NFL coaching community suffered a tremendous loss last night when former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green died from cardiac arrest.
Green complied a 113-94 record in 13 years as an NFL head coach. In 1998, he led the Vikings to a 15-1 season. Unfortunately for Green, he couldnt get the Vikings to the Super Bowl because the Vikings were upset by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game.
Green was also the head coach at Northwestern from 1981-1985 and Stanford from 1989-1991. Green was a part of the fabled Bill Walsh coaching tree.
Green’s passing elicited a response from former and current players and coaches around the NFL. Green was seen as a players coach and he gave several minorities coaches around the league their first shot including Tony Dungy who was Green’s defensive coordinator in Minnesota from 1992-95.
Most people remember Green for his epic meltdown after the Cardinals blew a 20-0 halftime lead against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night football.
Dennis Green was much more than that however. He was a tremendous coach and man and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace coach.
