As the calendar flips to November, playoff berths and league titles will start to sort themselves out.
This was a road-heavy week for the majority of our 16 D1 teams, so here’s a recap of what you may have missed on Saturday…
Mississippi State 45, UMass 20
Given how UMass has looked at times during another disappointing season, Saturday was actually encouraging. The Minutemen dropped to 2-7, but took a 10-0 lead after one quarter against an SEC program. Brandon Campbell had a three yard run and Jacob Lurie added a 24-yard field goal in the first 15 minutes. It was all Bulldogs after that though as Mississippi State scored 35 unanswered to pull away. UMass also got a 35-yard FG from Lurie in the fourth quarter and a Jakobie-Kenney James four-yard TD reception from AJ Hariston. Hariston was 7/11 for 62 yards while Taisun Phommachanh was just 6/13 for 49 yards and a pick. Ahmad Haston also went 4/5 for 25 yards. Campbell had 64 rushing yards on 10 carries and CJ Hester had 62 on 13.
UNH 31, Albany 14
The Wildcats went on the road and halted a two-game skid with an impressive performance against Albany, improving to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the CAA. Seth Morgan was 13/20 for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Myles Thomason had 17 carries for 57 yards and two catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. Logan Tomlinson had six for 73 and a score and Colby Ramshaw had one three-yard TD catch. The Wildcats’ defense held the Great Danes to just 251 yards of total offense and took the ball away twice.
Oklahoma 59, Maine 14
The Black Bears scored first on a Cooper Heisey three-yard TD catch from Carter Peevy midway through the first quarter, but that was about all the positive momentum Maine (4-5) could muster. The Sooners – who have been struggling by their standards this year – did what they were supposed to do while Maine got a nice little pay check for their troubles. Peevy finished 13/24 with 123 yards and the TD and he also led the team in rushing (6/30).
Stony Brook 31, Bryant 30 (OT)
The rough season for the Bulldogs continued as Bryant missed a two-point attempt in overtime after a 25-yard TD catch from Landon Ruggieri following a Seawolves TD to open the extra frame. The Bulldogs (2-7, 0-5 CAA) tied the game at 24-24 with 13:32 remaining on a Tristen Riley 19-yard TD catch. Stony Brook led 10-0 after one before Ruggieri caught a 15-yard TD from Brennan Myer. In the third quarter, Bryant got a 30-yard field goal from Bryce Soli and a 75-yard touchdown run for Markiel Cockrell sandwiched around a 40-yard TD pass for the Seawolves. Myer finished with 338 yards passing and the three TD’s along with a pick. Ruggieri (6/98/2 TD’s) and Dylan Kedzior (9/100) led the receivers. Kedzoir also had 47 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Robert Morris 6, Merrimack 0
Just when it looked like the Warriors were starting to click offensively, they lay an egg. Robert Morris’ lone touchdown came with 4:53 left in the third quarter in the form of an 82-yard TD catch by Shawn Charles. Merrimack (4-5) had 264 yards of offense, including 147 on the ground, but went just 4-13 on third downs. Ayden Pereira was 9/17 for 117 yards and also rushed 17 times for 54 yards. Jermaine Corbett added 49 yards rushing on 11 carries and 57 yards receiving on four catches.
CCSU 24, Wagner 14
The Blue Devils took care of business on homecoming weekend with a solid win over Wagner. CCSU is now 4-5 overall, but 3-1 in the NEC and still very much alive for the conference’s automatic playoff berth behind Duquesne and Robert Morris, who are both 4-0 in NEC play. Brady Olson had 162 yards passing and a touchdown along with 18 yards rushing and a rushing TD. Elijah Howard carried the rock 21 times for 75 yards and Paul Marsh Jr. paced the receivers with 49 yards. CCSU held the Seahawks to just 229 yards of offense, including only 34 yards rushing.
St. Francis 34, Stonehill 0
A downright disappointing year continued for the Skyhawks on Saturday with another blowout loss. Stonehill (1-7, 1-4) had -4 yards passing as a team and an embarrassing 56 yards total of offense. Meanwhile, St. Francis put up 477 yards of offense including 309 on the ground.
Penn 38, Brown 28
Brown lost its fourth game in five outings and dropped to 3-4 overall (2-2 in the Ivy League). Jake Wilcox was 24/34 for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Both Stockton Owen and Matt Childs rushed 11 times each for 58 and 49 yards. Mark Mahoney had seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Solomon Miller added four catches for 49 yards and a score.
