We recently caught up with Tabor Academy offensive lineman Will Smith on his commitment to Fordham University. Smith made the announcement of his commitment on social media last week.
The 6-4 300 pound Smith also held offers from UMass and Penn.
Here is what Smith had to say when we spoke to him.
NEFJ: Why did you decide to commit to Fordham? What appealed to you about the school and the program?
WS: “I took a junior day back in March with my family, it was an invite only and the moment I stepped on campus it was a great vibe. I liked how the coaches were all upbeat and welcoming.”
NEFJ: Talk about the staff and the impact they had on your decision to ultimately commit to Fordham.
WS: “Coach Burns started contacting me during my junior season and wanted to get me on campus to show me what Fordham is all about. Coach Conlin’s presentation was informative and highlighted the pride of the Rams program. The big factor that made my decision was my interaction with the offensive line, Coach Giufre. He is the kind of coach who is tough and holds you accountable, a style that works with me.”
NEFJ: What impressed you about the school itself? Now more than ever, picking the right school is important. Why did you say to yourself, this is the right place for me.
WS: “The campus is smaller and more compact than other schools I have visited in the past and I liked that. The football program is getting some great upgrades and that shows me the school is committed to being successful and supporting there future student athletes.”
NEFJ: Football isn’t forever. How much did finding a school with strong academics weigh into your decision?
WS: “I can pursue an education at one of the best schools in the country. It just was a great fit overall and my recruiting experience was amazing.”
Before Smith gets to New York, he will try to win an ISL title at Tabor. The Seawolves return one of the most talented rosters in the ISL-7.
