We got a chance to catch with Middlesex Athlete Orion Saunders after his commentary to Tulane.
Here is what Orion had to say about his experience at Middlesex and why he committed to Tulane.
NEFJ: Why did you decide to commit to Tulane? What appealed to you about the school and the program?
OS: I decided to commit to Tulane because when I was on my visit there in March I loved the city and the school. I want to go into Political Science and History and I feel like the academic programs there will set me up well. They also treated me like family. They took extra time to break down film with me and showed me how I could impact their team. They have been competing consistently in bowl games and conference championships and have had many defensive backs get NFL opportunities
NEFJ: How much of a role did Coach Woodward and your family play in this decision?
OS: Coach Woody (Scott Woodward) and my family played a huge part in my commitment. I can’t thank them enough. Coach Woody has a lot of connections all over the country that really propelled my recruitment. Coach Woody and my family advised me to go where I feel wanted and where the connections I make feel genuine. Tulane felt perfect.
NEFJ: What has the Tulane coaching staff told you in terms of where you will play?
OS: Coach Brez and Coach JJ recruited me as a corner but they also believe that I am a versatile prospect that can play multiple positions on the defense. Although I am most comfortable and experienced at corner, they believe my tackling ability makes me good at safety as well. I know that wherever I play on the field I will develop into an elite college player with the help of coaches there.
NEFJ: Has it sunk in yet that you will get to play Division 1 college football?
OS: It hasn’t really sunk in yet but I’m sure it will after my senior season. Right now I am focused on playing as well as I can for Middlesex and my teammates this season.
NEFJ: What did Middlesex do for you in terms of preparing you to be a student athlete at the Division 1 level?
OS: I feel that Middlesex has prepared me well. Here you have to be able to take on a large academic load all while playing multiple sports and leadership positions. I think that ability is going to help me when it comes to keeping track of what I need to do at the college level.
NEFJ: What are some things you would want the Tulane fanbase to know about you?
OS: I want the Tulane fan base to know that I am a guy that’s gonna work hard in everything I do. I know that everything there is earned and I am ready to get to work.
