If you didn’t watch Brett Favre Hall of Fame speech last night, you really missed out. Favre was terrific and he proved once again that he is the last great character we will ever see play in the NFL.
No disrespect to Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees, but they are boring compared to Favre.
Favre played the game of football with a boyish enthusiasm for 20 years. He was unconventional and fundamentally flawed but it didn’t matter because he always found a way to make plays and win games. Even if it wasn’t pretty, Favre got the job done and then some.
Favre wasn’t just a great player. He was a character too. He was cut from the same cloth as Fran Tarkenton, Bobby Douglass, Ken Stabler and Archie Manning. He loved playing the game and he liked having fun.
Like his predessors, Favre was also tough as nails and super competitive. Despite his goofy persona, Favre hated to lose. It ate him up.
Ask any of Favre’s teammates and they will tell you that they loved playing with him. The gunslinger from Klin, Mississippi was agreat teammate because he was himself and they were the boys. Favre was and is the genuine article.
It wasn’t always fun and games with Favre. He had a lot of ups and downs in his career. From an addiction to painkillers to sending inappropriate pictures to Jen Sterger. We saw the good and the bad when it comes to Brett Favre’s life. It wasn’t always fun and games.
Last night had a certain level of finality to it. It was sad in a way. It was the last time we’ll ever see a character like Brett Favre in the NFL. No one will ever come along again that is as goofy, tough and competitive like Favre.
Last night was the end of an era for football fans.
