The Patriots were once again busy on Thursday and Friday, signing three more free agents.
On Thursday, the Patriots signed 25 year old edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to a one year, $5 million dollar deal. Chaisson is coming off of a solid season for the Las Vegas Raiders in which he had 32 tackles and 5 sacks.
Chaisson was being taken 20th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has struggled thus far in his career but he is coming off the best season of his career so he could be turning things around.
The 6’3 245 pound Chaisson is a long and explosive pass rusher who has first step quickness, uses his hands well and can finish at the quarterback. He can make plays from the backside but consistency has been an issue. He will have an opportunity to take the next step in his career playing for Mike Vrabel.
Wes Schweitzer signed a one year deal on Friday. The 31 year old offensive lineman has started 62 games at both guard and center in his career. He most recently played for the New York Jets, but played in just 10 games over the last two seasons due to injuries.
Standing at 6’4 300 pounds, Schweitzer gives the Patriots another interior offensive lineman that they can add to the mix inside. His versatility is an asset but he joins a crowded offensive line room that will have a lot of competition this upcoming season.
Schweitzer has played for the Jets, Commanders and Falcons in his career. He was a sixth round pick of the Falcons in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Marcus Epps, 29, signed a one year, $4.4 million deal on Friday. He is recovering from a torn ACL suffered on Sept. 22 last season, but will be ready to go by training camp, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
The 6’0 190 pound Epps has 45 career starts on his resume. He was a captain for the Raiders in 2023 and he previously played for Josh McDaniels.
Epps was drafted in the sixth round by the Minnesota Vikings out of Wyoming. He has played for the Vikings, Eagles and Raiders in his career.
He joins a crowded safety room that has a lot of bodies but also a lot of question marks. One thing Epps does have going for him is that he can play free safety and play in single high coverage looks something the Patriots need in their new defensive scheme.
