It’s been a week of drastic change for BC football and it continued on Thursday.
Around 6:00 p.m., quarterback Dylan Lonergan announced on Instagram that he’s entering the transfer portal after just one season with the Eagles.
“Thank you Boston College for the opportunity to play and grow as a player and person,” he wrote. “I’ve decided I will be entering the transfer portal when it opens. We didn’t get the results we hoped for this year but very appreciative to my teammates and coaches who never stopped battling and the BC community and fans for all the support.”
Lonergan finishes his very brief BC career ends with him throwing for 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Things seemed great through the spring and two weeks in. Lonergan put on a show on national TV against Michigan State, throwing for 390 yards and four touchdowns in a shootout loss. That game had many (including us here at NEFJ) believing that the Eagles truly had their QB of the future.
But they didn’t.
Lonergan and Grayson James ended up playing musical chairs at the position all season long as the staff struggled to find any kind of consistency with either guy. Lonergan was also got injured in the final game against Syracuse, allowing James to come in and get a win in his final career game.
So now, it’ll be interesting to see where Lonergan ends up next. He clearly has potential, but is also still very, very young and defense found ways to confuse him and force him into turnovers this season.
From the BC perspective, things become very unclear at the most important position on the field. Shakier Reisig – a soon-to-be sophomore from Oklahoma – is currently the No. 1 QB on the roster, but played only garbage time minutes this year. He was here throughout bowl prep last winter and (presumably) can jump right into things and run the offense.
But, with new GM Kenyatta Watson now running the show, you have to think some big changes are coming (at multiple positions, not just QB) when the transfer portal window opens up in a few weeks.
