True freshmen are not suppose to make an immediate impact even in this day in day in age. Don’t tell that to wide receiver Joe Griffin and running back Alex Broome. Both have been inserted into the Eagles line up and they are paying immediate dividends.
Griffin scored the Eagles first touchdown last week on a two yard pass from Phil Jurkovec. Griffin boxed out the defender and made a basketball type play to secure the score. Griffin routinely made similar plays at Springfield Central.
To Griffin, making plays is something he’s always done. It is even more special for him to do it for a program in his home state.
“Being local, I know all the kids around in Mass. are looking up to me,” he said. “People text me all the time, it feels good to be a role model, someone people can look up to.”
Alex Broome is not from Massachusetts. He played his high school football at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Despite that, he is making a big impact on the Boston College offense. Broome rushed for 83 yards on nine carries last week and scored on a 40 yard touchdown run.
Eagles Coaxh Jeff Hafley spoke highly of Broome after last week’s game.
“He’s got great vision. He’s strong. He’s good in pass protection. He picked some big blitzes.”
Hafley also praised Griffin who he called “special” and said that his effort at practice Carrie’s over to games.
“Joe Griffin is going to be a special player. He does it in practice, he does it games. The more he’s learning, the more he’s going to play.”
Both will play a bigger role moving forward this season and their roles could determine the trajectory of the Eagles season moving forward.
