Boston College Athletic Director Blake James has issued a strong public statement on Tuesday addressing the 2025 football season’s disappointing performance and outlining a major commitment to elevating the program.
Despite a 2-10 finish, which James acknowledged “did not meet the standards of Boston College Athletics,” the athletic director confirmed that Head Coach Bill O’Brien will be retained for the 2026 season, expressing confidence that O’Brien is the “right man” for the job.

The core of James’s statement centered on the school’s decision to significantly boost financial support for the football program to align with its peers in the “Autonomy Four” conferences.
The most notable financial commitment addresses the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, particularly in light of the House legal settlement. James announced that BC will immediately increase its commitment to student-athlete revenue sharing to the maximum permissible level, emphasizing a competitive response to the changes impacting intercollegiate sports.
Beyond direct financial support for student-athletes, James detailed a plan for significant investments in operational and administrative support for the football team. A key move is the hiring of Kenyatta Watson as the program’s General Manager. Watson’s role will focus on crucial areas such as roster management, player recruitment and development, and general program oversight, aiming to enhance the program’s ability to operate effectively and compete at the highest level.
To sustain this new level of commitment, James stressed the critical role of philanthropic support. He announced that Boston College has secured a $50 million challenge to match, on a 1-to-1 basis over the next 5-7 years, new endowment gifts dedicated to athletic scholarships and operational costs (including travel, nutrition, and medical care). This philanthropic goal underscores the school’s intent to provide the necessary resources for competitive success while upholding its academic and ethical standards.
James concluded his letter by expressing gratitude for the continued dedication of alumni and friends, positioning their support as essential to enabling student-athletes to strive for excellence in athletics, academics, and service. This announcement signals a clear, proactive shift by Boston College to invest heavily in its football program’s resources and administration in pursuit better of on-field results.
