Boston College bolstered its defensive front by securing a commitment from former Harvard standout Alex DeGrieck via the transfer portal this past weekend.

A Rochester, Michigan native, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound edge rusher makes the short move across town to Chestnut Hill after a highly productive tenure with the Crimson. DeGrieck arrives as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining, bringing a veteran presence to a defensive unit looking to find its identity under head coach Bill O’Brien.

The addition is a timely one for the Eagles, who struggled to generate consistent pressure during a difficult 2-10 campaign in 2025. DeGrieck was a First Team All-Ivy League selection, leading Harvard’s defense with six sacks and an impressive 21 quarterback hurries this past season. His career totals at Harvard include 44 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and nine sacks, proving he has the motor and technique to be a disruptive force in the backfield.

By joining the 2026 transfer class, DeGrieck enters a revamped defensive end room that includes fellow newcomers Chris Jones from Georgia and Demetrius Ballard from Buffalo. His versatility is expected to be a major asset for defensive coordinator Ted Roof, as DeGrieck has shown the ability to play with his hand in the dirt or stand up in various packages. While jumping from the Ivy League to a Power 4 conference like the ACC presents a step up in competition, DeGrieck’s high snap count and proven production suggest he is ready to compete for an immediate spot in the rotation.

This move underscores Bill O’Brien’s strategy of utilizing the portal to find mature, “plug-and-play” talent to bridge gaps left by graduations and departures. For DeGrieck, the transfer offers a chance to showcase his skills on a bigger stage against some of the nation’s top offensive tackles. For the Eagles, it represents a calculated gamble on a local star who could be the missing piece in revitalizing their pass rush before they open the 2026 season against Cincinnati.
