Big men to watch from BONE, and more

SPRINGFIELD — One of the premier events in the area every offseason, the BONE (Best of New England) camp at Springfield College again was a huge success on Friday.

Now, we camped out at one of the best big-man groups, and the competition was fierce. Given how many players were competing at the same time, we were not able to see everyone. Therefore, this is not a definitive list of the best performers. This is only the tops of what we were able to see.

So, in that respect, take this list with a little bit of a grain of salt. But these were all very good players that we saw in those big man drills.

Gregory Celestin, OL, 6-4, 300, Xaverian — This player’s recruitment has not really taken off yet, but the 2024 guard might see a bump after his BONE performance. Celestin has strong hands, and gets right into the chest off the pass rusher. Already strong with room to get stronger, Celestin helped his cause Friday.

Owen Fitzsimmons, OL, 6-3, 288, Nobles — This NEPSAC All-New England player had a nice day. The 2024 player is likely a guard at the next level, and was very successful in Friday’s 1-on-1s. Even if he got bat initially, he stayed with his block and won the majority of his reps.

Matthew DeFeo, Edge, 6-2.5, 265, Williston Northampton — We’ve seen this post-grad a lot going back to his days at Xaverian, and he always seems to do well at events like this. He’s definitely gotten bigger since the last time we saw him, and he showed off an explosive first step at times. He will do well at Williston.

Dajzuan Johnson, Edge, 6-4, 230, Minnechaug — This is a player to watch going forward. The class of 2024 playeer lookd terrific on Friday. Johnson moves extremely well for his size, and overpowered a couple of the offensive linemen he went up against. His best football is ahead of him.

Ty Miles, OL, 6-5, 290, Londonderry (NH) — This is a player that’s a little under-recruited at the moment, but again, that might change. Miles has good size, and moves very well for 290 pounds. Miles did very well in 1-on-1s, and should see his stock rise after this camp.

Joshua Schuetzmann, OL, 6-7, 287, Williston Northampton — Williston had a nice contingent there Friday, and this was one of the reasons why this program had such a strong day. At 6-7, 287 pounds, he carried it well, and his movements were more fluid than you’d expect. The 2024 player can play tackle for someone in college.

Another player we ran into is Wachusett’s Grayson Baker, who recently committed to Army. Baker, a 6-7, 250-pound tight end, has a bright future ahead of him.

“I’ve always wanted to serve in the military,” Baker said. “When I went to Army, it was just the place for me.”

Baker was happy to just check out BONE and not have to worry about his college decision anymore.

“You can just watch and you don’t have to get stressed at all (over performing),” Baker said. “Now, you can just watch the younger guys, chat with the players and coaches.”

Wachusett will be a little young this year, but Baker gave us two players to watch: quarterback Dillon Harper, and athlete Logan Dennett.

“There are more,” said Baker, but those two were the first that came to mind.
