Bill Belichick did a conference call with the local media this morning. He answered questions about Sunday’s loss to the Bills but per usual, he avoided questions regarding his future.
When asked about his future and desire to stay with the Patriots, Belichick gave the standard preparing for the upcoming opponent answer.
“Yeah, I’m focused on getting ready for the Jets. We haven’t played them in a long time, been all season, so I’m going to work on the Jets here and get ready to go.”
What a surprise. Belichick is avoiding answering the question by “focusing” on the upcoming opponent. We have only gotten that response from him 10,550 times during his 24 years in New England.
Belichick was also asked about reflecting on his time in New England and once again, he punted on the question.
“I’ll deal with that some other time. Right now, it’s trying to get the team ready for the Jets, finish up the Buffalo game, continue to coach the team and try to help the players and the team play better.”
I get it. He wants to focus on the game, as most coaches would but it is ok to let you guard down a little. If nothing else, it shows the fans that you care about their support and adoration.
The fact that Belichick has maintained his cyborgsque tone all season long despite the team’s lack of success has not sat well with the fans or the media alike. You would have thought he would have been more transparent. Instead, he has still maintained his combative, secretive approach to answering questions.
Obviously we know Belichick has never talked about how much money he makes or his job security, but the reality is, he will have to answer questions regarding his future at some point.
Then again, knowing Belichick he won’t answer any questions regarding his future because he doesn’t want to. He has always does things on his terms and that is not about to change.
